ARCHIVE // GLOSSARY

Glossary

A14-N — ICSE designation for the Mares Null Sequence: the non-sequential segment within Adra Mares’s final transmission. 12.62 seconds of a 97.34-second record; 40.12 seconds were released to the family.

Aftervoice — Acoustic residue produced when Veyrath repeats or degrades a voice it has retained. Emotionally right before it is verbally clear.

Answer event — A moment when human speech, name, or strong affect gives the Soth enough relational data to deepen retention and provoke re-expression.

Beacon Sacs (crew: mud-lanterns) — Basin-interface gas-pressure organs that vent, lure heat, and regulate charge. Exposure to human equipment makes later pulses more accurate.

The Bloom — A triggered eruption of living membrane, Name-Vents, and Bloom Flesh; the ground configuring itself. Where Priors form fastest.

Calyx Reach — Restricted frontier region holding classified survey anomalies and route instability. Veyrath is filed inside it.

Cindral Mesh (crew: black grass) — Conductive basal field matrix mistaken for ground cover. Wet, it completes circuits through anything standing on it.

Civic Share — The Compact’s legal bundle of rights to air, ration, medicine, record, transit, and release.

The Compact — The Intercolonial Compact: the mapped human network, roughly 260 light-years, bound by archive law and the Concord of Release.

Concord of Release — The body of rite and law governing death, certification, and the carriage of names. Its rites-traffic provision privileges an ordained signal-rites officer’s carriage of testamentary record against Executive review.

The Continuance — The faith holding that death is a sacred interval, unknown and inviolable; funeral rite, certification, archive sealing, and non-invocation ethics are bound together in it.

Dead key — The illegal use of a dead person’s biometric or voice pattern as a functional access component. Grief is never a password; the dead key works for measurable reasons, which is the crime.

The door rule — The doctrine that a threshold may be real and still forbidden.

Harmonic Tubes — Acoustic storage structures. They do not record words; they store pressure, returning speech as rhythm, breath, and consonant.

Hook Motes — Attachment organisms that fasten, sample, and tune neural conductivity, adjusting a body toward the field. They do not bite.

ICSE — The Intercolonial Survey and Cartography Executive: the Compact’s exploration, route-survey, and contact-risk authority; sponsor of the Veyrath expedition.

ICSEV Mandate — ICSE command vessel holding high orbit beyond the strongest Soth interference; it receives corrupted retention telemetry and sits outside the retained volume. Director Vant’s seat, and the distance the sterilisation order is given from.

ICSEV Meridian — The expedition vessel: 164-metre spine, mission complement 24, NAIAD-7 navigation core. It flew twice on Veyrath: down, and once more.

Isen and Thale — Veyrath’s paired captured moons. Their alignment is the only window through which the unstable corridor opens.

Kaen — Veyrath contact tissue: conductive fibrous cablework that stores field events and can immobilise or incorporate living tissue. The medium through which retained pattern is most directly expressed in flesh. Its counter is the Sere Crust.

The Knot — The human experience of sequence retention inside the Soth: records out of order, memory bleed, the dead arriving early. Not a time loop. Nothing rewinds; nothing is undone.

Mares Null Sequence — Technical name for the non-sequential segment of Adra Mares’s final transmission. See A14-N.

The Murk — Lowland basin of vapour, Veil lattice, and Beacon-Sac pools, where acoustic and visual references conflict and recordings desynchronise.

NAIAD — Navigational Assessment and Integrated Approach Drone: the core architecture carried by probes and by the Meridian (a NAIAD-7 core). Not the ship’s name.

Name-Vents (crew, frightened: doorflowers) — Resonance organs that dilate when a repeated, identity-weighted acoustic pattern arrives. They respond to names because names are identity carried with stress.

Nara — Orisene: the refusal of an unlawful claim. Not denial, not possession, not surrender; one may practise nara and still love the unreleased completely. The common translation, “letting go,” is wrong in the way that matters most.

Non-Invocation Statutes — Compact laws forbidding interactive reconstruction or instrumental use of the dead. Extended, after the Veyrath findings, to retained pattern wherever expressed.

Prior — A Retention Form: field-retained human pattern expressed through local matter. Not an alien pretending to be human; human information reorganised by an alien ecology. A Prior can carry true information without being the dead. The question of what else it carries is not resolved in this record.

Protocol Seven — Contact classification indicating civilisational risk if publicly mishandled. Its section 4.9 governs terminal site management.

Restricted service commutation — Suspended prosecution in exchange for monitored consultancy; the instrument that placed Dr. Sela Mares aboard the Meridian.

Returnists — Continuance faction holding that the dead are not lost and the Compact has hidden the road to them. The reason truth itself can be dangerous.

Rheal — The magnetically active red dwarf Veyrath orbits. Everything is lit wrong.

Rib Arrays (crew, once: hollowstags) — Motile casts that discharge accumulated field energy through hollow ribs. Their orientation can be read, imperfectly, as a map of the field.

Scaffolders (field nickname: rib-walkers) — Mobile decomposition frameworks that arrive after death. A death scene can be erased within hours; the ecology serves the cover-up better than the Executive ever could.

Seam-Rippers — Heat-seeking breach organs that target interfaces: suit seams, vents, wounds. They do not bite. They open.

Second answer — A living human consent that would complete a dead-key route and give Veyrath a stable road into the Compact. Adra Mares was the first answer. There was no second.

Sequence retention — The Soth’s preservation of high-intensity events, identities, sounds, and biological states out of normal order, later re-expressed through records, terrain, aftervoice, Kaen, and Priors. Never a replay.

Sere Crust — The field term for the white mineral: a Sere-Complex of hydrated bleached silicate and inert biofilm occurring where the Soth cannot conduct. It interrupts retention, weakens Priors, dampens aftervoice, and preserves inscriptions.

The Shatterlands — Glass ridge country between the Murk and the White Passage: wind tunnels, cutting slurry, Seam-Ripper ground.

Skyhooks (crew: stillbirds) — Atmospheric organisms anchored in static gradients. They gather above field disturbances. They are not omens; humans make them omens.

Soth — Adra Mares’s term, borrowed from Orisene, for Veyrath’s planetary field resonance: a held, listening pressure. Whether anything in it wants is a question this record leaves to its factions.

The Steward — The Meridian’s records-and-compliance system. It has no protocol for preferring one true record over another. It continues to report.

The Summit — Veyrath’s high contact ground: Kaen seams, Name-Vent colonies, white fracture plates, and the threshold amphitheatre where the first answer was given and is still being held.

Unreturned interval — In the Concord of Release: the interval between a person’s last word and their rite. It is not ours. It is not to be called into. What is kept there is kept.

Veil Aerosol Lattice (crew, rarely: red fern) — Basin-breathing membrane system whose aerosol disrupts motor prediction and memory indexing. Not hallucination: disorder.

Veyrath — Adra Mares’s field-name for RHEAL-IVc, from Orisene roots meaning red veiled threshold. The formal record says CYX-31B. The family record says Veyrath.

VRTH — The consonant tag from Adra’s field-name, used in suppressed ICSE signal indices. Finding it proved the lie; the same index proved the use.

White mineral — The crew and political name for the Sere Crust: sanctuary, Prior-suppressant, inscription medium, dampening shield — and the future atrocity, in one substance. Never a clean solution.

White Passage — The pale mineral corridor where the field weakens: the one walkable silence on a listening world. Quarried once, by seven people, under a signed diagram. The seam is still there.

Witness Archive — The survivors’ certified evidentiary packet: the names of the dead and missing of Calyx Reach severally and in full, proof of the suppression and of the dead key, and the warning in doctrinal form — and no route, no method, no Prior record, and no map. Proof, not instructions. The distinction is the archive.
